Since the Eiffel Tower is not included in the Rick Steve’s tour, we decided to book a tour with Easy Pass Tours, which was recommended by Ricks Steves. We did this just before the Rick Steves tour started. It was a beautiful sunny afternoon. We could see all of Paris without any restrictions. It was an amazing tour.
The Eiffel Tower was built for the 1889 World's Fair. It stands 986 feet tall. It was named after Gustave Eiffel, whose company designed and built this monument. Our guide explained that it was originally meant to be disassembled after the World's Fair, but due to the popularity of the Tower, it has remained in place. It is the most visited paid monument in the world every year. It has 3 platforms. The first platform is 187 feet, and has a glass floor. You can see the people walking from the ground level directly under the Tower. The second platform is 377 feet tall. You can get to the first and second platform by taking the stairs or lifts. The third platform is 896 feet high, and worth the wait. You can only get to the top via a lift. The view from the top is AMAZING! It is unlike any other big city in America because there are no skyscrapers, well except for one. Montparnasse Tower is 689 feet tall with 59 floors, and sticks out like a sore thumb. Construction was completed in 1973 and it mostly contains offices. Since the architecture of Montparnasse was not aesthetically pleasing, 2 years after its completion, construction on buildings taller than 7 stories was banned from Paris. While Montparnasse is not a pretty building, it is said to have a beautiful view of the city and the Eiffel Tower from the top (we did not make it to Montparnasse). |
